ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER:  Engraved by Thomas Rothwell (c. 1740-1807) from an original study by W. Turner. Thomas Rothwell (1742-1807) was a British engraver, printer, and artist known for his work on earthenware, porcelain, and enamels, as well as line engravings of topographical scenes and portraits. Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775 - 1851) is generally acknowledged to be the most creative and perceptive artist that Britain has ever produced. By the age of 13 he had already been admitted to the Royal Academy Schools and a year later was exhibiting his first watercolours at the Academy.

PROVENANCE: This view was taken from a series of chiefly topographical scenes published in 'The Pocket Magazine', 'Ladies Pocket Magazine' and 'Pocket Print Magazine' (1795-1796), and later reprinted in 'England Delineated' (1804), from where this example is taken.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Swansea Castle (Welsh: Castell Abertawe) is located in the city centre of Swansea, Wales, UK. It was founded by Henry de Beaumont in 1107 as the caput of the lordship of Gower. The castle is now ruined and only two blocks remain, though the site has been improved in the 2010s for use as a public space.
