Here we have a most unusual and rare form dog
bank. The bank is molded with the dog’s
head coming out of the top of a gentleman’s hat with the brim turned up on the
sides. At the base of the dog’s head is
a large coin slot. When this bank was
made, pennies were much larger than today, the size of half dollars. The face of the dog looks like a boxer, with a
short snout. The potter decorated the
bank with Rockingham spatter glaze. The bank
measures 4” to the top of the dog’s head by 4” wide. The bank has 2
lines that don’t extend to the top or bottom of the bank, with damage to the
coin slot which was widened by a clever child to retrieve the coins
inside. This is an extremely rare form for a bank not shown in any
of the books on collecting yellow ware.
