The title "Sabotage" refers to Black Sabbath's legal disputes with former manager Patrick Meehan. This 10-month-long dispute overshadowed the recordings and shaped the general mood. Under the production of guitarist Tony Iommi - again recorded in England - the focus was on a direct, aggressive sound. Tony Iommi explained that part of the concept was to return to "rock 'n' roll." The cover artwork is considered to be one of the worst in rock history; the band claims to have believed that it was test recordings, which is why no attention was paid to the wardrobe.
