A large and finely decorated Kyoto Satsuma covered jar dating to c. 1890. The body is painted with a continuous river landscape of soft hills, distant pavilions and chrysanthemum clusters in a pastel Kyoto palette of pink, lilac and orange, all heightened with delicate gilding. Broad gilt brocade borders frame the shoulder and foot, and the domed lid repeats the floral bands with a gilt knop.

The underside bears a black-and-gold rectangular mark Yamashu (山珠) with a red Shimazu crest, typical of Kyoto export workshops of the late Meiji period. A substantial and elegant decorative piece that displays beautifully.
