Anastasius, 491-518AD
Æ Follis, small module type 498-512AD
Constantinople mint
23 mm, 8.7 grams
In 498 AD, Anastasius introduced multiples of the nummis, the tiny <1
gram low-denomination copper coin of the time. The largest multiple,
at M=40 Nummi, weighed c.9 grams.
In 512 AD the weights of the copper denominations were doubled, without any change in design.
This
represents a rather curious and unusual event in Numismatic history.
Usually the change goes the other way around, coins are largest when
introduced, and with any change in size over time, the newer coins are
produced at smaller weights to accommodate inflation, increased profit,
etc.
0.97 grams, 9 mm
