INVREF#CL1

This 1873 stereoview shows a memorial cross featuring an inset portrait of Abraham Lincoln, a popular item made in the wake of his assassination. Super clean original near mint copy!

These memorial photographs, often in the form of stereoview cards, were created for both private mourning and to commemorate public figures who had been lost. The cross is surrounded by "dissected" or "skeletonized" leaves under a glass dome.

These items were produced by companies like E. & H.T. Anthony & Co. and were popular in the mid- to late-19th century. E. & H. T. Anthony & Company was the largest supplier and distributors of photographic supplies in the United States during the 19th century. The company is notable for capturing various important historical images of the time, including one of the only daguerreotypes taken of 7th President Andrew Jackson.

E. & H. T. Anthony & Company acquired a large collection of Mathew Brady's negatives as payment for his considerable debts. Brady, who went heavily into debt documenting the American Civil War, transferred many of his negatives to the photographic supply company in exchange for cameras and other materials.
