The American Women Quarters honor a diverse group of notable American women who made significant contributions in a variety of fields, including suffrage, civil rights, abolition, government, humanities, science, space, and the arts. The women honored are from ethnically, racially, and geographically diverse backgrounds.

Althea Gibson was a trailblazing multisport athlete who accomplished an impressive list of firsts throughout her athletic career in tennis and professional golf. She became the face of American achievement in a global sport platform and paved the way for future Black talent in sports. By the end of the 1950s, Gibson won 11 Grand Slam titles, including multiple championships at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, and the French Open.

The reverse (tails) design portrays Althea Gibson with a racket in one hand and a ball in the other while standing confidently by a net on a tennis court, as if in preparation before playing a match. Inscriptions: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “ALTHEA GIBSON,” “QUARTER DOLLAR,” and “TRAILBLAZING CHAMPION.”

The obverse (heads) depicts a portrait of George Washington. This design was originally composed and sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser as a candidate entry for the 1932 quarter, which honored the bicentennial of George Washington’s birth. Inscriptions are “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2025.”
