"Heroes Symphony" is a symphony (also as a Symphony No. 4 "Heroes" known), which the American composer Philip Glass created in 1996 on the basis of David Bowie's "Heroes" album. The former »low symphony« was also based on the Bowie album »Low«. On the »Heroes Symphony« there are two flutes, two piccolo flutes, two clarinets, a bass clarinet, two bassoon, three horns, three trumpets, two trombones, a bass trombone, tuba, percussion, harp, piano, stringer and Celesta.
The "Heroes" symphony is played by the American Composers Orchestra under the direction of Michael Riesman with Dennis Russell Davies as a composer. Like the predecessor "Low", "Heroes" was one of the most experimental and avant-garde albums, so that it only made sense that Philip Glass should follow the "low-symphony" with "Heroes" and should translate the minimalist sketches of Bowie and Eno for a full orchestra.
Surprisingly, the arrangements and the orchestration of Glass underline the icy atmosphere of the original compositions; The shiny, almost glass -looking textures breathe beautiful cold. Captivating!
Reviews
HC v. Dadelsen in Fonoforum 7/97: ".. beautiful pop pieces from 1977, converted to sparkling instrumental music, with the pointed Glass's brushwood! Many thanks to Andrea Giovanni from San Marco (the idea was good!); Many thanks today to David Bowie and Brian Eno! "
