This is a rare, hand-carved wooden Hahoe mask representing “Chung” (the Buddhist Monk) from the traditional Korean Hahoe Mask Drama (Hahoe Byeolsingut Talnori). These masks originated over 800 years ago in Hahoe Village, Andong, South Korea, and is recognized as National Treasure No. 121 of Korea.

🔹 Character – Chung (Buddhist Monk):

• Identified by its movable lower jaw, which opens and closes to create expressive, lifelike movement.

• Used in performances to satirize corrupt monks, bringing humor, laughter, and social commentary to village audiences.

• The bold eyebrows, long nose, and wide grin add to its comedic and dramatic impact.

🔹 Cultural Significance:

• Hahoe masks were central to ritual dances, honoring spirits while providing social satire and community entertainment.

• Original antiques are nearly impossible to find; even authentic vintage reproductions like this are highly sought-after by collectors.

• Genuine hand-carved Hahoe masks rarely appear outside Korea.

• The movable jaw feature makes this mask especially desirable, as it’s a defining characteristic of the Monk (Chung) role.

• This piece is not only decorative but a true cultural artifact, making it a standout addition to any mask or ethnographic art collection.
