Notes if any:
The Blackjacks LP, Worlds Apart, Polydor Records, 1980, is a key album in the history of AOR (Adult-Oriented Rock) and melodic hard rock, largely because of its famous band members: vocalist Michael Bolton (then known as Michael Bolotin) and guitarist Bruce Kulick (later of KISS).
Musically, the album is characterized by A blend of Melodic Hard Rock and AOR (Adult-Oriented Rock) with significant influences from Soft Rock and Classic Rock. It fits into the same vein as early 80s acts like Journey, Foreigner, and early Bon Jovi.
The album is dominated by Michael Bolton's powerful, soulful, and highly dramatic vocals, which are already fully developed into the signature style he would later use for his massive solo career. He belts out the rockers and delivers over-the-top emotion on the ballads.
Bruce Kulick's guitar playing is a major highlight, featuring solid, crunchy rock riffs, plenty of melodic harmony leads, and well-structured solos. While the overall sound is more commercial than metal, Kulick provides the "hard rock" edge that distinguishes the album from soft rock.
Production: The album has a polished, professional 1980 sound, produced by the legendary Eddy Offord (known for his work with progressive rock bands like Yes). This gives the album a dense, arena-rock feel, full of keyboards and big choruses.
It remains an important collector's item due to the future success of its two main stars. Then to top it off to have this album with the vinyl Near Mint plus a 1980 Richmond 72 Pressing with the word "Masterdisk" in the deadwax just puts the icing on the cake, as the old saying goes. A nice collectors item.
