Here we offer the first edition of the marvelous 1875 sequel to "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" and "In Search of the Castaways," Jules Verne's classic, L'Ile Mysterieuse (in the original French, later printed in English as "The Mysterious Island,") published by Librairie Hachette, Paris. The book is in the original first form that the book took in its first edition as a publication of J. Hetzel in its final 1875 form, but this first was undated, as were most of Verne's firsts. This is a large, ornately-decorated book, gilt-embossed with a gilt-topped text block (to keep dust out), featuring numerous large, imaginative illustrations by J. Ferat. One of the more lavish of iconic early editions.
Boards are soiled and edgeworn (please see pics.) Front flyleaf has been replaced. Solid hinges; binding is very tight and square; text and numerous illustrations are very clean, bright, and crisp. 616 pages. Measures approximately 11 x 7.25-inches.
