Measuring about 6" x 9-1/4", and unpaginated, this hardback book, titled "The Northern Border Brigade", is a historical account of early settler life in Iowa in the nineteenth century, including the formation of a brigade to defend Iowa's northern border from "the hostile Indians." It appears to be privately published, with no copyright page to provide dates or publisher credits, and even the author is not credited by name. The book is generally accredited to Harvey Ingham, however, who was the editor of the "Des Moines Register and Tribune", and whose father, William Harvey Ingham, is mentioned in the text as the Captain of Company 'A' of the Northern Border Brigade. As for the publication date, my best guess would be 1926, based on the partly illegible presentation inscription on the title page, which is dated "Christmas, 1926" and appears to be signed by the author, Harvey Ingham (although I have no provenance). The presentation is addressed to Ben J. Gibson, a lawyer who had served in the Iowa State Senate and was the State's Attorney General in 1926. Based on the lack of copyright information, it is presumed to be the First Edition.
