Title: An Ancestral Cradle
Date of Printing:
circa 1910s
Printing Technique:
hand-tinted photograph
Artist:
photographer Wallace Nutting
Details:
ORIGINAL hand-tinted photograph by Wallace Nutting in original
¾” wide pressed wood frame with a dark brown and gold painted finish. Photograph tipped in on original matting with
embossed plate mark. Plate mark is
cleanly defined and visible. Mat has
even overall age toning to a warm cream color.
There are no visible foxing, water stains, creases or tears to the mat
or photograph.
The title “An Ancestral Cradle” is written in ink
inside the plate mark below the lower left half of the photograph. “Wallace Nutting” is written in the same
handwriting in ink inside the plate mark below the lower right half of the
photograph. This is not Wallace
Nutting’s actual signature; a number of the colorists wrote both the titles and
Wallace Nutting on the original mats, hence the wide variety in appearance of
the Wallace Nutting “signatures”.
The cradle appears to be occupied with a baby, and
there is a cat seated on the ladderback chair to the left of the fireplace.
We have taken the piece apart, cleaned the glass,
and rebacked the original mat with acid-free materials. The Nutting back mats were originally backed
with cardboard which is acidic. Over
time, this cardboard backing can do damage to the original back mats that the
Nutting photographs were attached to.
Size:
with frame the piece measures 15 5/8” wide by 12 1/8” high, visible portion
including the original tipped-in matting measures 14 1/8” wide by 10 5/8” high,
the actual photograph measures 9 ¼” wide by 6” high
Condition:
Condition is GOOD, minimal fading and oxidation to the photograph, clean mat
with even age-toning and no foxing or stains, sharp and visible plate mark
