Description:

A rare set of four of the first five volumes (Vols. 1, 3, 4 & 5) of this popular monthly magazine for women published between 1798 and 1832. It contained an assortment of articles, including essays, poetry, biographies, short stories, and serialised novels. Each issue included a section entitled the 'Cabinet of Fashion' which presented hand-coloured illustrations and descriptions of the latest styles in ladies attire.
These volumes uniformly bound in contemporary tree calf to boards, spines recently rebacked in calf with gilt lettering on red morocco labels. Externally, all four volumes remain sound and firm, some wear to extremities, bumping to corners. Also sound internally with endpapers recently replaced. Pages and plates with varying degrees of age-toning, foxing, handling-marks and other blemishes, particularly in Vol. 4. Occasional short tears or small loss to edges/corners. Margins trimmed close in a few places, occasionally resulting in partial loss to text at edges. Vol. 4 lacking pages 5-8, duplicates of pages 41-44 in their place, also lacking the two colour plates for the March issue. Vol. 5 lacking pages 245-248.
