On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) scarce antique print "Grand Cham." A view of the Grand Cham / Khan of Tartary.  

DATE PRINTED: 1683 or shortly afterwards.

SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 11.5 x 16.5 cm, 4.5 x 6.5 inches (medium) plus margins. 

ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Unknown.

PROVENANCE: Published by Mallet, Alain Mannesson Mallet (1630-1706) in his Description de L’Univers. Mallet a French mapmaker and engineer who served in the armies of Louis XIV. After rising through the ranks, Mallet was appointed as Inspector of Fortifications, a job which also required mathematical skills and which made him a competent military engineer. Eventually, he joined the court of Louis XIV at Versailles, where he taught math and focused on writing. Mallet is best known for his Description de L’Univers, first published in 1683, in five volumes. A wide-ranging geographical work, the Description included textual descriptions of the countries of the world, as well as maps of the celestial sky and the ancient and modern worlds. The Description continued to be published until the early eighteenth century.

TYPE: Antique wood block engraving printed on paper.

VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank.

CONDITION: Good. Suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Virtually all antiquarian paper is subject to some normal ageing due to use and time which is not significant unless otherwise stated.
