Carl Edwards' NASCAR career was marked by remarkable consistency, exciting late-race charges, and a distinctive backflip celebration that endeared him to fans. Debuting full-time in the Cup Series in 2005 with Roush Fenway Racing, he quickly established himself as a contender, winning his first race at Atlanta in only his fifth start. Over his 12 full-time seasons, Edwards amassed 28 NASCAR Cup Series victories and 38 Xfinity Series wins, often challenging for championships. His career was highlighted by several close calls for the Cup Series title, most notably in 2011 where he tied Tony Stewart in points but lost the championship on a tie-breaker (most wins). Known for his thoughtful and articulate demeanor off the track, Edwards also cultivated a public image of a well-rounded individual with interests in farming and fitness. In a stunning move that surprised the motorsports world, Edwards announced his retirement from full-time racing at the end of the 2016 season at the age of 37, while still at the peak of his career and having just missed out on the championship in the final race. He cited a desire to pursue other interests and spend more time with his family, stepping away from the intense demands of professional racing with an uncharacteristic quietness for a driver of his stature.
