unissued and uncancelled stock certificate of The Flint and Pere Marquette Railroad Company (State of Michigan)

This is an engraved certificate printed by American Bank Note Company. The  company incorporated in 1857 as the Flint & Pere Marquette Railway. After after a few mergers and growth to over 250 miles of track, it fell victim to unpaid interest payments, the Panic of 1873, and a crash in the lumber market. It fell into receivership in 1879 abd remained so until reincorporated as the Flint & Marquette Railroad in 1880. This certificate is dated ten years later, and nine years before a consolidation that changed the name to The Pere Marquette Railway.

This is a preferred stock certificate, meaning that stockholders were first in line for dividends and before stockholders of common stock.
