DEVON WATER PLANTS

Flowering Rush - Butomus umbellatus

FLOWERING RUSH This is the only member of the rush family to bare a flower. Tall flower stems up to 120 cm carry lovely umbels of pink flowers with deep red centres. Green leaves are narrow and fleshy, triangular in section. Tall, emergent plants such as Butomus provide habitat for pond insects, especially emerging dragonflies. It can be planted up to 30cm (12") deep, useful for deeper water areas where some other marginals would not thrive.

WINTER NOTE: During September, this plant will start dieing back and all the leaves will be gone by mid autumn. The root is a bulb and will grow new leaves in the spring. If you are ordering from September through to April, you will only receive the root system.

You can reduce the depths of your margins by sitting the planting baskets on concrete blocks or similar.

You will receive a young plant around  5 - 10cm 2" - 4" high, (see note above about the winter) with some or start of leaves and  will be sent in it's rooted form to save on postal costs. It will require potting on receipt. NOTE: Winter and early spring there may only be shoots off the roots.

This plants can be planted directly into boggy areas or into the bottom of lakes/ponds. If there is a liner, we suggest using a water planting basket. Use aquatic soil, topped with heavy gravel or large stones. Alternate ways can be offered if you contact us.
