This two part set includes obverse and reverse lead trial strike splashers for Canada's 1867 Confederation Medal restrike produced in 2017 as part of the Canada 150 celebrations.  This type of trial strike is often done in lead to test new dies before striking final coins or medals.  By using a soft metal like lead, dies can be tested before they are hardened or before final surfacing is completed.  This lead trial strike set was used internally at the mint producing these medals and was not offered to the public. A rare and unusual opportunity to own this type of production trial pieces.  While the impression in lead is the same 76 mm as the final medals, these splashers are struck on thick oversize lead blanks which have squished outward under pressure, creating splashers with a diameter close to 90 mm.  Visually impressive and rare.

Canada’s official Confederation medal was widely regarded as one of the most beautiful medallic works of art of the 19th century when it was created to mark confederation in 1867.  When the Fathers of Confederation succeeded in creating a new nation in 1867, the event was celebrated by the production of Canada’s first official commemorative medal. Today, original 1867 Confederation medals are extremely rare and highly sought after, with most of the few known surviving examples housed in museum collections.  Limited edition restrikes were issued in 2017 in both silver and bronze to celebrate Canada 150.

The allegorical reverse design features Britannia, the classic personification of Great Britain, peacefully seated and adorned with a helmet and armour. She holds a trident on her right as a shield ornamented with the Royal Union Flag rests on her side. A lion, the stalwart symbol of Great Britain, is seated at Britannia’s feet and is resting its head on her knees. Britannia is presenting a figurative representation of the British North America Act that reads CONFEDERATION. The Confederation scroll is being bestowed upon four young maidens, who represent the four original provinces of 1867 (clockwise from the top): Ontario with a sickle and sheaf symbolizing agriculture; Quebec holding a canoe paddle that representing commerce; Nova Scotia with a shovel representing its rich mining; and New Brunswick with an axe, representing forestry. The prominent Latin motto around the reverse reads JUVENTAS ET PATRIUS VIGOR, or YOUTH AND PATRIOTIC STRENGTH.

The obverse features an ultra-high relief effigy of Queen Victoria as she appeared in 1867.
