Glued to MusicThe Grover 102 Series Rotomatics Tuners changed guitar tuning forever when they were first introduced, improving tuning accuracy, adjustability and durability.
Vintage tuners had stamped, sheet metal housings that allowed dirt in which degraded the gears over time and also required lubrication, Grover Rotomatics changed that by enclosing the gears in a cast metal housing. Sealing the gears in means they are lubricated for life with no maintenance necessary. They also improved the gear ratio to 1:14 (from 1:12 on vintage Kluson tuners) for greater accuracy when tuning and introduced a threaded collar around the base of the string post for the screw in bushing which speeds up installation and supports the string post.
Grover 102 Series Rotomatics Tuners are one of the most popular and widely used machine heads available with Gibson using them extensively on their Les Paul guitars since the '60s.
