The VLKSM (Всесоюзный Ленинский Коммунистический Союз Молодёжи), or the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League, was the official youth organization of the Soviet Union. It was commonly known as the Komsomol and operated from 1918 to 1991. The VLKSM was closely tied to the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) and served as its "helper and reserve," preparing young people for party membership and leadership roles.
The organization was open to individuals aged 14 to 28 and focused on political education, promoting Communist ideology, and engaging youth in various activities such as industrial projects, sports, and cultural events. Membership in the VLKSM was often seen as a stepping stone to career advancement in Soviet society, as it demonstrated loyalty to the Communist Party.
The VLKSM also oversaw preparatory organizations for younger children, such as the Young Pioneers (ages 9–14) and the Little Octobrists (ages 7–9). These groups introduced children to Communist teachings and prepared them for eventual Komsomol membership.
