Traité de Fauconnerie Faucon Hagard Falconry Color Painted Photo Print 17x22.5
Paper is curled at edges, and there is mild edge wear. There is a crease coming in from left edge at about 7.5 inches down from the top, and some corner creases. See photos. There are various small light areas which seem to have been reproduced from the paper in the image that was used as the basis for this reproduction. Paper clean. Central image clean and unmarred. Odor free.
This is an over-painted image on a continuous-tone black and white direct photographic reproduction of Plate 11, Le Faucon Hagard on branch from the Traité de Fauconnerie.
The paper is 24x20 inch heavy artist-quality paper. Within the sheet, the reproduced image area from the original plate is 22.5 x 17 inches. There are absolutely no dots or rosettes visible under magnification. To produce this image, someone had access to some plates from the Traité, to a very nice black & white photographic reproduction setup, and of course to someone who knew how to paint.
As you no doubt know if you're reading this, the Traité is a very rare folio which included sixteen leaves of color plates, issued between 1844 and 1853. Twelve plates showed falcons, two showed falconry equipment and two showed people engaged in hawking. The plates were originally issued in elephant folio size, which would be about 27x20 inches, so this is a bit smaller.
I have four of these photo reproductions of Traité plates. This one was painted in color over the photo image, and the other three are black and white. I have no information on the former owner, other than that they also owned some 1960s falconry plates issued by the California Hawking Club, so clearly they had some interest in hawking.
As you look closely at the work, you can see that the person painting it was a good painter, not someone who just picked up a paintbrush and went for it. However, you can also tell that they had the advantage of the shading present in the black and white image to add texture to their work. For instance, the lovely texture on the wing is just coming through from the photograph rather than being actual brush strokes. It's more like a color wash. On the other hand, getting the head and beak to look right took some careful brush strokes.
Please take a good look at the images to make your judgments. To see the paint-over up close, see image 12 which is a magnified image of a small branch at the edge. You can clearly see the photographic grey area peeking out beyond the brown paint.
At time of listing, I also have three of the black and white photographic reproductions available. Please check my other listings if interested.
