- Junior Johnson (1931-2019) was an American professional stock car driver. He won 50 NASCAR races in his career before retiring in 1966. By the 1970s, he became a team owner, winning the NASCAR championship with Cale Yarborough and Darrell Waltrip
- The roots of modern stock car racing can be traced to the moonshiners of the 1940s. Junior Johnson and many of stock car racing's pioneers honed their driving skills delivering moonshine. The transition from bootlegger to racer was as natural as the changing colors of the maple leaves in autumn in Wilkes County, North Carolina
