Great Britain revolutionized the postal system with the introduction of the 1840 Penny Black. One year later, the ink was changed from black to red-brown. The result was the “Penny Red.”
Issued imperforate, this 178-year-old stamp was the third adhesive postage stamp issued for use in a public postal system. It features two corner letters at the bottom and a portrait of Queen Victoria.
