Haematoxylum campechianum, commonly known as Logwood, Campeche Logwood or Bloodwood, is a flowering tree belonging to the Fabaceae family. It is native to southern Mexico and parts of Central America, including Belize, Guatemala and Honduras.
The botanical name Haematoxylum derives from the Greek words haima (“blood”) and xylon (“wood”), referring to the characteristic colour of the heartwood.
The heartwood of Haematoxylum campechianum has been historically valued as an important source of natural dye. Depending on the preparation and mordant used, it can produce a range of deep violet, blue, purple and black shades.
The wood is hard and heavy and has a naturally pleasant odour traditionally described as resembling violets.
