Forged iron with swelled body shaped like a squid (?) and housing a thick wedge section melon slice form blade. When folded, the tail of the blade extends as a tentacle with the hinge gussets suggesting eyes and the upturned terminal, in fact a fid for splicing lines, is the tail. The body is formed in the full round to complete the image. The blade opens only to about 135^o precluding its use as a weapon as many if not most sailors were serving against their wills.
