Pierced copper, 15th-16th century AD. 2 7/8” height, of heart form with scalloped bottom and pierced with two crescents, probably armorial devices of the owner indicating hereditary battle prowess against the Ottoman Turks. The top with integral hook for securing to the reins. Originally gilt, a number of these would be suspended from the reins of a horse of a noble or royal rider to identify him and add to the pomp of a tournament or parade.
