Vintage and scarce folding knife from Massif Central region, handmade
in Thiers, France for the french Au Sabot knife company from the 1980's.
Established in 1870 and still a family run business, Au Sabot makes knives in traditional
and original patterns in Thiers, France. They utilize a wide range of new and old
equipment and Thiers skilled-handwork is the keystone of their production.
Every knife of theirs has been crafted with pride by a single master cutler,
ensuring that each masterpiece is unique to its craftsman's work ethic!
Laguiole pattern knives are the most famous of the French regional style knives originating
in the early / mid 19th century with the current footprint being established in the 1860's
as a blend of local straight bladed 'laguiole droit' and the Spanish navaja folders which
the story goes were introduced to the region from seasonally migrating French
shepherds who brought them back from Spain after the winter months.
There are plenty of stories told about the bee or mouche (fly) design on
the backspring as well as the cross shaped pins on the handle.
Blade made of high quality 440 stainless steel.
Handle made of brass linings and bolsters with dark wooden scales
and inlaid with brass rivets shepherd's cross on the one handle scale.
Forged spring decorated by serial guilloche with the traditional honeybee.
Nail nick opening. Slipjoint blade system.
Complete with nice brown leather case with sharpener.
The blade of the knife is stamped on the one side with: LAGUIOLE
PRESTIGE with the brand logo of company - a boot, 440 and FRANCE.
The knife is in overall very good preserved authentically condition for its age
with restored razor sharp blade. The spring of the knife is strong and tight.
The blade is firmly attached to the handle without any play.
