Antique c.1700s French Gobelin Tapestry Fragment, Figural, Putti, 15" x 14"
This is from my private stash. I'm disbursing panels I just am never going to get to make up in to those lush opulent down-filled throw pillows I love. YOU get to do it, instead. A superb c.1600s to earliest 1700s French Gobelin (or possibly Flemish) woven tapestry, the upper right corner of an outer border salvaged from a much larger wall tapestry, but very interesting subject-wise and also plenty to stitch to a lush velvet or silk panel and then work up as front to a lavishly fringed pillow. Figural fragments are so hard to find! This is a nice larger one 15" x 14" outer, but the fact that it is a corner leaves that open space. Interesting, and will be just gorgeous accented there with perhaps antique metal (in gold) passsimenterie (trim), ribbon, something to add accent to that angle. I have made up many from this era, quite similar to this one and have shown at least one in that l group image so you can see how mine turned out. I've loved them for decades. I have a couple of bolster-sized long panels made up for my window seat and meant to make this one up to go along there, but just am not going to get to it. Your gain! My loss.
Very good to excellent for age and type. The linen canvas warp is strong. There are really very few flaws, quite remarkable considering the age. The figure is wonderful! The yarns used are all hand spun and hand dyed, palette range is fabulous and still vibrant. I have shown the backside so you can see the work, original unfaded colors, not so much different than the front side. There is one spot lower right edging that needs to be stitched - it isn't torn, isn't a split, seems to just be 2 weaving edges that leave a split about 1.75" in from edge. Just a needle and thread. There are a few spots I can tell have been worked by way of holding small splits together, but it is not a tattered panel and is very suitable for a pillow top. You'll have to adapt that indented part - this was an upper right corner border, I have been bedazzled enough not to notice anything that would prevent me making this into a superb down-filled throw pillow except the time to do it. You please look closely at the photos just in case. It has no visible moth or insect damage or loss. Measurements also appear on the photos. Lies very flat, will be lightly rolled with archival tissue for shipment. Will be listing a large private collection (my own) of c.1600 = c.1850 tapestry panels. Be sure to mark our shop and come back!

In 1998 we made the move from high profile stores in Beverly Hills, CA and Dallas, TX, to an entirely internet based operation. We most often use USPS for our shipping needs but will be happy to ship by another carrier if you prefer.
We charge only actual postage & insurance, never a handling fee and never for packaging materials. Ebay is now requiring that our clients rank us on "shipping". The shipping price, speed and handling are actually under the sole control of the delivering postal agency, not Antiques & Uncommon Treasure so please remember that and leave us high DSR rankings. As always, please also feel free to contact us if you have any problems or concerns, we'll do what we can to ensure a happy and mutually enjoyable transaction.
Insurance has been eliminated as an option by ebay, forcing us sellers to either ship your items without insurance or assume that expense also. We always insure our items BUT, more importantly, pack them extremely well knowing that most are not replaceable. Again, damage in transit, while rare in our experience, is due to the postal agency handling and not caused by Antiques & Uncommon Treasure. Please remember that when leaving DSR ratings. Thanks!
Our shipping days are usually Monday and Friday though we do our best to ship within one to two days once paid. Otherwise, paid items will be shipped on the first shipping day after payment is received (except when special circumstances exist). We prefer to use USPS whenever possible, and require all packages to be insured. If you prefer another method of shipment, please mention it. We charge only actual expense of shipment/insurance, except in the case of larger items which must have special wood crates built. Wood crate charge, when applicable, is a flat $35.00 in addition to actual postage & insurance charges.
