Summary:
A culmination of over 70 years of creative work by the contemporary artist Kimiyo Mishima! Since the 1950s, Kimiyo Mishima (1932-), who began her career as a contemporary artist, has produced numerous masterpieces such as "cracking prints" made of clay, works featuring empty cans and cardboard, and pieces using scrap iron and waste materials she collected herself, surprising viewers with her creations. This book introduces Kimiyo Mishima's creative journey from the early days to the present through approximately 90 works. These works, which combine a critical view of negative aspects of modern society such as information overload, mass consumption, and waste issues with Mishima's unique playfulness, are now increasingly accepted with powerful impact as artworks that touch on pressing social issues in a more immediate way.
Kimiyo Mishima continues to garner attention both domestically and internationally, particularly at public art installations on Naoshima in the Seto Inland Sea and at the Mori Art Museum's "Another Energy Exhibition: The Power to Keep Challenging - 16 Female Artists from Around the World" (2021-22)! Includes: Chapter 1 Early Works 1950s-1970s, Chapter 2 Cracking Prints around 1970, Chapter 3 Confronting Waste, Chapter 4 Large-scale Installations. Contributions by Takuo Tokuyama (Mori Art Museum), Yasumasa Morimura (Artist), Masanobu Ito (Director of Nerima Art Museum).
