Description

I have recently had the privilege of purchasing several pieces of pottery directly from renowned potter, Walter Fleming. While some of these may have similarities, each is one-of-a-kind unique pieces from his collection. Walter Fleming was born in 1937 and began potting in 1986. He studied under Burton “B. B.” Craig, the well-known Catawba Valley potter who shared with Walter the traditional Catawba Valley techniques of forms and glazes that is realized in this jug. Walter digs his own clay on his property off the historic Third Creek in Iredell County, North Carolina; a rich, deep red Carolina clay. An interesting fact about Walter is that he turns his pots counterclockwise due to being left-handed. This is not true of all south-paw potters.

This is a wonderful Walter P. Fleming Folk Art Pottery Decorated SWIRL 2-handle GALLON SIZE Face Jug! It has a beautiful cocoa brown and cream color swirl glaze with blue pupil eyes. Also note the counter-clockwise swirl design – that is what makes this South Paw swirl jugs so incredibly special! This jug is also decorated with the classic dot, straight- and wavy-line decoration around the shoulder which adds a lot of character. I was told by Walter himself that he uses a spoon to create the wavy design, a fork to create the lines and the end of an old wooden spool of thread to create the dots.  Walter always employs china teeth and this one has 5. This face jug measures approximately 10 ¼” tall and is 6 ½” wide ear to ear. It is signed Walter P. Fleming on the bottom and has his signature “thumb print” at the base of each handle. Walter makes very few double handle gallon jugs so to obtain one is a real treat! I was able to acquire a couple of these great jugs and each is different is their own way. While this is a spectacular face jug it has a slight chip repair on the top lip. See photos. The price is reflective of this small chip. This face jug is still worthy of any collection! Any “white” you see in the photos is from the reflection of the flash.
