The bank was authorized in 1856. The bank closed shortly after the Civil War although the exact date has not been ascertained as of yet. In March, 1865, weeks before the end of the war, the bank offered $1 in coin for every $8 in its paper. After the war, its notes were listed at between 22 and 25¢ on the dollar for a number of years. The bank building was sold at auction in June, 1872. The $10 depicts two men "solving the world's problems" flanked by a vignette of the Virginia coat of arms t left and a profile portrait of Washington at right. The note has an overall red tint and a darker red TEN protector at bottom center.
