Kepes, a Hungarian-born painter, designer, educator, and art theorist, connected with Laszlo Moholy-Nagy in Europe, learning the Bauhaus teaching directly from his friend and mentor, eventually joining him as an instructor at the New Bauhaus/Chicago School of Design in 1937. Moving on to MIT, where in 1967 he founded the innovative Center for Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS), a laboratory for the study of the interrelationships of science, technology, and art.

The book stands as an early attempt to bridge the divide between what C. P. Snow famously called The Two Cultures — science and the humanities — pivoting around the new way of seeing espoused by Le Corbusier (Vers une Architecture, 1923), Moholy-Nagy (The New Vision, 1928), and of course Kepes himself (The Language of Vision, 1944). With contributions from leading figures in the fields of biology, physics, physiology, mathematics, crystallography, psychology, philosophy, engineering, architecture, sculpture, painting, poetry and art history. Most notably: Jean Arp, Naum Gabo, Siegfried Giedion, Walter Gropius, S.I. Hayakawa, Jean Helion, Fernand Leger, Richard Neutra, Bruno Rossi, and Norbert Wiener.

With essays and bibliographical references including work by Josef Albers, Hans Arp, Sophie Tauber Arp, Herbert Bayer, Harry Bertoia, Max Bill, William Blake, Umberto Boccioni, Sandro Boticelli, Constantin Brancusi, Alexander Calder, Eduardo Catalano, Paul Cezanne, John Constable, Eugene Delacroix, Robert Delauney, Theo Van Doesburg, Jean Dubuffet, Marcel Duchamp, Albrecht Durer, Charles Eames, Viking Eggeling, Buckminster Fuller, Naum Gabo, Juan Gris, Mathis Gruünewald, Hans Hartung, Stanly Hayter, William Hogarth, Wassily Kandinsky, Gyorgy Kepes, Irme Kepes, Johannes Kepler, Paul Klee, Oskar Kokoschka, Frank Kupka, Le Corbusier, Fernand Leger, El Lissitzky, John Marin, Andre Masson, Joan Miro, Piet Mondrian, Claude Monet, Henry Moore, Richard Neutra, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Paul Rudolph, Eero Saarinen, Louis Sullivan, Eduardo Torroja, Mies van der Rohe, Henry van der Velde, Vincent Van Gogh, Georges Vantongerloo, Jacques Villon, Konrad Wachsman, Edward Weston, and many others.
