Yosegi-zaiku (parquet work) is a type of traditional Japanese marquetry developed in the town of Hakone during the Edo period (from 1603 to 1868). Resembling a type of mosaic, Yosegi-zaiku is created through the combination of fine oblong rods of wood chosen for their grain, texture and color, making an intricate surface pattern which is then sliced into thin layers. It is commonly found on traditional Japanese puzzle boxes and similar decorative items.
The white part of this parquetry is made from Mizuki wood (Scientific name: Cornus controversa), which is famous as a material for traditional Kokeshi dolls (Japanese cylindrical wooden doll). The black part is made from Jindai Katsura wood. Jindai refers to buried wood that has been buried in water or soil for over two thousand years, making it an extremely valuable material.
The structure of this strip of paper consists of a 0.1mm sheet sandwiched between two 0.15mm sheets of parquetry.
