Anthony Van Dyck "Titian and his Mistress," Engraving, c 1630, Prof. Framed

Up for auction is this very desirable circa 1630 etching by Anthony van Dyck (Flemish (active Italy, Antwerp, and England), 1599–1641) Engraved by Lucas Emil Vorsterman I (Flemish, 1595–1675) After work attributed to Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) (Italian (active Venice), first securely documented 1508, died 1576). It depicts the artist Titian and his mistress (see description below). This piece has been professionally framed and matted and measures 15 1/4 inches by 19 1/4 inches. The inner mat cut out is 9 3/8 inches by 12 1/4 inches. It is in excellent condition with no issues... no foxing, stains wrinkles, tears, etc. Please excuse any reflections on the glass. This work has not been removed from the frame for inspection. It is an unknown state. On the back of the frame is information about the print as well as a very old title that was preserved by the framer.

Anthony van Dyck’s print of a lost self-portrait by the Venetian master Titian shows the artist with a luxuriously dressed woman who is significantly younger than he is. Included within the work is a popular Venetian verse that comments on the woman’s beauty and declares that she is expecting a child, while calling Titian “great” and praising his artistic skill. The woman’s arm rests on a box containing a skull, and her eyes look away from the aged Titian, indicating the artist’s mortality and man’s inevitable decline into old age. The master reaches out to touch the abdomen of the young, sumptuous woman, contrasting himself with the new life of her unborn child.

Do not under estimate the value of buying your art already framed. A framing job such as this would be 100 dollars or more at a store such as Michael's.


Shipping weight, well packed, is 4 1/2 lbs. Insurance has been added to the shipping cost as per Ebay's mandate.
