Antique French Sterling and Silverplated Handled Manche a Gigot, Circa 1890.
Joseph Silver Handled "Manche a Gigot" (lamb bone holder), Circa 1890. There is the Minerva stamp on the handle "Minerve 1" indicating that the handle is 95% silver. The tip of the handle is also inconspicuously stamped "L" and "C" in a delicate feathered design indicating that the artisan may be Louis Coignet silver carving sets at (services à découper) the time. Other parts are silverplated as was common in the era. Some of the plating has worn away. Very good antique condition with some slight dings and light patina. The mouth of the tool is open. When the key is twisted a ring tightens around the clasp and five pins secure the lamb bone keeping your hands clean.
The handle is comfortable to hold. Length 8 1/2" x 1". Weight is 4.2 oz (119 grams).length 23 cm or approx 9". A conversation piece, treasured object, and useful for your next event.
