Introducing Genuine Larimar, sourced directly from the Dominican Republic mines. Our photos, including light box shots, showcase the stone's genuine variability. Note that not all Larimar is translucent, and authentic Larimar is exclusively available from the Dominican Republic Mine Consortium. Stones from elsewhere, such as India or China, are fake colored stones.
In the heart of Bahoruco’s mountains, these mines are the only place in the world where Larimar is found. Workers spend hours each day mining this rare blue stone from deep underground. We source our Larimar through local workshops, ensuring top-quality pieces.
Larimar, also known as the Dolphin Stone, was first discovered in 1916 by a Dominican priest and later rediscovered in 1974. The stone's name combines the discoverer’s daughter's name, Larissa, with the Spanish word for sea, mar. Classified as a semi-precious stone in 1979, Larimar is known for its unique color and delicate transparency.
This rare blue variety of pectolite is geologically distinct, with its blue color resulting from copper impurities. The mining process is labor-intensive and often disrupted by the hurricane season, making Larimar even rarer.
After extraction, Larimar is cut and graded. Less than 10% is of jewelry quality. Factors such as color, patterning, luster, clarity, translucence, and chatoyance determine the stone’s quality. Each piece is unique, formed over millions of years, and may have natural imperfections.
We offer a variety of polished slabs in different grades, all sourced with the utmost care to bring you the best of this extraordinary gemstone.
