Tamarillo - Tomato tree
Latin name: Cyphomandra betacea
The tamarillo is not a true tomato botanically, but is also called 'tomato tree'.
The bushy plant comes from tropical Brazil and is ideal for greenhouse, winter garden or a pot plant.
Tamarillos are egg-shaped, 4-7 cm (1.5-2.5 in) long fruits which should be peeled, as the shell contains bitter substances.
The fruit pulp has a very interesting sweet aroma which grows with increasing maturity.
Tamarillo fruits can be combined well with fruit to exotic desserts.
