About the Book:
The 1970s witnessed Israel’s emergence as a major exporter of military equipment. Israel has been ranked among the world's top twelve military exporters. Those exports go to at least sixty-two countries for a total annual income of well over a billion dollars. Arms sales have included combat-tested, high performance military equipment ranging from light arms and ammunition, communications devices, and defense electronics to highly sophisticated heavy weapons such as jet fighters, tanks, and a whole array of missiles.

As Professor Stanley Hoffmann points out, this book is “an objective and searching contribution to the understanding of Israel's role in the world. The study documents the rise of Israel's arms industry, analyzes the reasons for it. ..as well as its importance for the Israeli economy, and shows the decisive role played in the expansion of the arms industry both by the Israeli government and the U.S. government.”

It also describes the ties created by arms sales between Israel and several Latin American countries. “These [nations] have turned to Israel as a major supplier not only because of needs created by local disputes or the political importance of their military forces, but also because of Israel's willingness to tailor exports to such needs...and to impose no restrictions for reasons of moral and political distaste... .”
