About the Book:
This is a book about the United Nations, and particularly about the people who work in and around it. For seven years —the early years which began with such high hopes and ended with disillusionment for many—Bernard Moore was the B.B.C.'’s resident correspondent at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York. In the ‘thirties he spent as long with the League of Nations in Geneva, and from this unique experience as a camp-follower of the two experiments in international co-operation he has drawn a picture which brings the United Nations and all that goes with it to life.
The Second Lesson, in a good-humoured way, puts the United Nations in a human setting ; tells how the members of the international community live, work and play ; describes some of the personalities who have appeared on the United Nations’ stage, and in general brings the organisation down to earth. Nevertheless, although it is written in a language easily understood by the general reader, the book is basically a serious one on a serious subject. Mr Moore has some pertinent things to say about this second lesson in international co-operation.
About author, Bernard Moore:
Bernard Moore's connection with international affairs covers nearly a quarter of a century. As the resident correspondent of leading English newspapers in Geneva he witnessed the failure of the Disarmament Conference, and covered among other things the League debates on the Sino-Japanese dispute, Italy's invasion of Ethiopia and Hitler’s occupation of the Rhineland. As a special correspondent in Vienna, Prague, the Saar and Berlin he saw at first hand the unfolding of the events which led up to the Second World War. He was at the Berchtesgaden and Godesberg talks in 1938, and then went to Czechoslovakia to witness the German occupation of the Sudetenland after the Munich Agreement.
In 1940, Moore joined the B.B.C.’s Empire Services, and during the war was Editor of the Overseas News Broadcasts. In 1945 and 1946 he reported for the B.B.C. as its Special Correspondent on the opening meetings of the United Nations in London and New York, and the final Assembly of the League of Nations in Geneva. The following year he went to New York as the B.B.C.’s resident correspondent at the headquarters of the United Nations, and his reports became familiar to millions of radio listeners at home and abroad.
Bernard Moore returned to England in 1954, and he is now Head of the Colonial Service of the B.B.C. He is a member of the Royal Institute of International Affairs, and a member of the Council of the Royal African Society. He is fifty-two years old, married, and has two sons and one daughter.
