About the Book:
Janace Elizabeth Doelman was born May 14, 1954 in Flossmoor, Illinois. Growing up, she didn’t feel complete until at age 22, she found the LDS church, and soon after, met her husband Alden M. Stout. She was married in the Washington D.C. Temple on August 3, 1977. She was a teacher, and had a gift for caring for kids with disabilities. She took her skills of teaching into her next role as a mother to four children.

Over the next 30 years, Jan dedicated her life to her children, her husband and those she served at church. She was no longer a teacher for a school district, but instead became a teacher in her own home and the walls of her church building. Whether she was teaching Primary, Young Women, Seminary or Relief Society, she put her all into her calling. Through the years, she faced challenges, but could be seen smiling with arms open to others. She moved often, nearly every two years on average, and yet found a way to make everything OK again after life flipped upside down.

Finally having graduated her last child, she looked forward to decades of golden years with her husband, while she welcomed grandchildren, traveled and settled into the place where they would retire. But on July 26, 2010, her life changed, irrevocably. Rushed to the hospital for what would later be deemed a seizure, she was initially told she was fine. When it happened again, it was clear that there was something very wrong. After weeks of testing, their worst fears unfolded with the diagnosis of brain cancer. With each new development in her cancer, hope could have dwindled, but she was stronger than ever. In the face of debilitating surgeries and life-altering treatment, she emerged as a fighter. She loved more fiercely and she prayed more earnestly than ever before.

She wrote a book, she danced in the sunlight, and she laughed at her daughters’ stories. She walked when she thought shed never walk again and she smiled when she wanted to cry. She created her own hope in the face of hopelessness, and she took another breath when she thought she would die at any moment. In her heart she climbed a mountain, and there her soul flew higher than the top.

In the words of Janace Stout, this is her story.
