This marked what many historians consider to be the wildest, most dramatic final day in regular-season history. The New York Rangers needed to beat the Detroit Red Wings and score at least six goals for tie-breaker purposes to claim the final East Division playoff berth. After the Rangers accomplished both in a 10-2 rout at home, the Canadiens had beat the Blackhawks or score at least four times to secure the final spot.
