DATE PRINTED: c.1840 from a plate first produced in 1804 (see provenance below for the publication history).
SIZE: The printed area including titles is approx. 7" x 9.5" (18 cm x 24 cm) with a centre fold as issued.
ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn by George Cole. The map started life in 'The British Atlas', a joint work of Cole (artist and cartographer) and Roper.
PROVENANCE: A plate first published in Cole and Roper's "The British Atlas " in 1804. The maps subsequently appeared in Joseph Nightingale’s (fl.1806-20) 'English Topography' and updated with early railways and plate numbers in Thomas Dugdale’s 'Curiosities of Great Britain or England and Wales Delineated' from 1835. The latter was published by John Tallis until Lucinda Tallis took over her husband’s business when he died; their son, John Tallis, published this work with from c.1843. In c.1842 these maps were replaced with new plates engraved by Archer. The Archer plates are far more common than the earlier Cole plates.
TYPE: Antique copper plate engraving printed on paper.
VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank.
CONDITION: Very good. Suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Virtually all antiquarian maps and prints are subject to some normal aging due to use and time which is not significant unless otherwise stated.
