This exquisite (circular ) box was cast in brass only after the artesian originally sculptured his creation in raw beeswax. This particular piece comes with multiple compartments which house a variety of herbal powders for makeup, remedies, vermilion ( bindi), etc. The motif is cast in the image of Lord Ganesh (Ganesha). Each compartment is accessible by simply loosening the finial.

As a footnote: vermillion is a deep red paste or powder. This dramatic color is worn by Hindu women that represent their religious devotion, along with their marital status (married). This practice can be traced to the 3rd century AD.
