Photograph Notes: William Armstrong's famous swing bridge over the River Tyne between Newcastle in Northumberland and Gateshead, County Durham. It was opened in 1876 and uses hydraulic power to swing 360 degrees, allowing vessels to pass either side. The photographer was standing on the nearby Tyne Bridge.
