Photograph Notes: The principal shopping centre in Brighton. The mall was opened in 1995 on the site of the former shopping centre built in the mid 1960s and one of the last open plan concrete structures built in Britain. The open plan turned some pedestrian areas into wind tunnels whilst the lower levels became the haunts of ne'er do wells and others of that ilk. From the 1980s shops began to close particularly on the lower levels until the centre became something like a ghost town in parts. Consequently, it was redeveloped by Standard Life and whilst the end result mirrors many other malls around the country it is a vast improvement on what was originally there. Taken from the junction of Dyke Road and Western Road with Chartwell Court and Sussex Heights, respectively, to the rear.
