ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn and engraved by William Cobbett (1763-1835). William Cobbett (9 March 1763 – 18 June 1835) was an English pamphleteer, farmer, journalist and member of parliament, who was born in Farnham, Surrey. He believed that reforming Parliament including abolishing the rotten boroughs would help to end the poverty of farm labourers. Relentlessly he sought an end to the borough-mongers, sinecurists and "tax-eaters" .He became a well-known author and among other books published his Political Register and Rural Rides.
PROVENANCE: Published in the Cobbett's "A Geographical Dictionary of England and Wales", 1832.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: In 1832 Cobbett published this atlas with very simplified maps showing no rivers , roads and a crude / inaccurate outline shape. Perhaps his desire to make it a cheap production for the mass market explains this.
