Several sailors from Baška Voda, Dalmatia and Croatia took part in the famous Battle of Vis in 1866, which was a decisive naval battle between the navies of the Habsburg Monarchy and the Kingdom of Italy.

The naval battle near Vis took place on July 20, 1866 in the Adriatic Sea near the island of Vis (in the Vis Channel). It ended with the victory of the smaller Austrian fleet over the larger Italian one. It was the first major naval battle in which steam and iron, armored ships were used, and one of the last in which deliberate nailing of a ship to a ship (beak strike) was used. It was the first battle in which armored ships clashed on the high seas. A large number of sailors from Dalmatia, Serbs and Croats took part on the Austrian side.

However, the conflict between Italy and Austria was only a side scene of the great Austro-Prussian War, where Austria suffered a very heavy defeat in the main Battle of Sadova in Bohemia (July 3, 1866): Austria had to agree to Prussian annexation of a number of German states that had hitherto been associated with Austria - and also had to cede Venice and Veneto to the Prussian ally Italy.
