Instant Case Hardening with Cherry Red Surface Hardening Compound. The instant case hardening compound from Cherry Red allows you to instantly case harden your steel parts without the need for any heat treating equipment. You can turn a steel piece into a hardened tool right on your shop floor. With this non-flammable case hardening powder, thus, you can make steel tools, machined parts, dies, gears, blades, and other tools with minimal effort. To use this compound, first, you have to heat your part until you get a cherry red color and then apply a thin but complete coating of this case hardening powder on your part. When the powder melts and produces a dark glaze, you have to reheat the part until cherry red, and then you can cool it in oil or water to get the glaze off your part. Finally, by brushing off the remaining glaze, you get a fine surface finished part. You get a case depth of around less than ten thousandths of an inch, which may vary based on the steel type and the thoroughness of the heat application. You will get this surface hardening compound from Cherry Red in 1-lbs. jar and 5-lbs. pail containers. As per USDOT regulations, this surface hardening compound is non-hazardous, and it does not contain cyanide. However, you have to use the product in a well-ventilated environment, wearing adequate safety equipment. Also, before starting with the process, the surface of your part has to be free from cutting fluids, lubricants, paints, rust, etc. as these can interfere with the process. The Cherry Red instant case hardening compound works best on ferrous materials, such as hot and cold-rolled steels, tool steels, etc. Whereas, the compound cannot be used on stainless steel and chromium and vanadium alloy steels.

Benefits

Applications

Steel parts with no special heat-treating equipment required

Notes

Case depth varies based on the type of steel and thoroughness of the heat applied by the user, but it is generally less than ten-thousandths of an inch. The process imparts several parts-per-million of carbon into that case hardened surface. Please note that it does not add any ""thickness"" and is not a coating like paint or anodizing.
