This is a letter from the well-known Italian
statesman Giovanni Giolitti to the notable
Italian scientist Leonardo Bianchi.

What makes this letter of particular interest
is that it was signed by both of these men.

This letter is written in Italian.

The letter is typed, with some
handwriting at the end of the letter.

Giolitti signed the letter in black ink.

Bianchi added a handwritten note just
below Giolitti's signature. Bianchi then
added his signature (also in black ink)
to his handwritten note (see scans).

Giovanni Giolitti (1842-1928) was an Italian
statesman who served as Prime Minister of
Italy five times between 1892 and 1921.

Giolitti is widely considered one of the
most powerful and important politicians
in Italian history. The period between
the start of the 20th century and the start
of World War I, when he was Prime Minister
and Minister of the Interior from 1901 to 1914,
with only brief interruptions, is often referred
to as the "Giolittian Era".

Giolitti served as Minister of the Interior on
five occasions, as well as serving as the
Prime Minister of Italy on five occasions.
His complex legacy continues to stimulate
intense debate among writers and historians.

Leonardo Bianchi (1848-1927) was an
Italian neuropathologist who later in his
career became involved in politics.

Bianchi was a professor of psychiatry and
neuropathology at the Universities of Palermo
and Naples. He founded the Psychiatric
Institute of Naples in 1882. In 1905, he was
the Minister of Public Education, and in 1919
became a member of the Italian Senate.

His best known work is La Meccanica del
Cervello (The Mechanism of the Brain).

Bianchi is remembered for his studies
and experiments of the frontal lobe.
He described the lobe as the center of
coordination and fusion of the incoming
and outgoing products of the sensory
and motor areas of the cortex.

Unfolded, the letter is about 10" by 8".

It is dated February 11, 1913.

It is typed on a sheet of stationery of
the Italian Ministry of the Interior. Giolitti
was serving as the Minister of the Interior
at the time this letter was written.

The typed portion of the letter reads as
follows (Italian first, then English translation):
